Answer Engine Optimisation

So the answer engines find you first.

When a customer asks an AI assistant about your category, it answers in one voice, not ten blue links. Answer Engine Optimisation is the practice of making sure that voice says your name, cites your content, and links back to you.

What is AEO

Answer Engine Optimisation, in one paragraph.

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the discipline of shaping content, structured data, and site architecture so that large language models - the engines behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Bing Copilot - cite, paraphrase, and recommend your brand when users ask questions in your category. Where SEO optimises for rank on a search results page, AEO optimises for being the answer.

Be findable

Clean HTML, accurate Schema.org and sitemaps the crawlers trust. Table stakes.

Be scoreable

Structured, specific and numeric where possible. Vague marketing prose dies in the ranker.

Be quotable

Write passages that hold together when lifted. One idea per paragraph, with a clear attribution phrase.

Why it matters now

The search interface is being rewritten.

Search used to be a marketplace of ten blue links. Today, a customer types a question into ChatGPT and gets a single, confident paragraph in return, with or without a citation. For B2B categories, that paragraph is often where the shortlist forms.

If the paragraph doesn't mention you, you effectively don't exist for that query. Teams that treat AEO as a specialist discipline now will compound an advantage; those that wait for best practice to settle will arrive to find their competitors already cited.

"The model doesn't cite your brand because you said it loudly. It cites your brand because a specific passage, on a specific URL, was the cleanest way to answer the user's question, and the attribution came along for the ride."
How we run it

Four phases, measurable at every step.

Baseline, engineer, measure, iterate. Nothing speculative, and every change is anchored to a pre-change scorecard so that movement is attributable.

01 · Phase

Citation audit

Fifty category-defining questions run against ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. For each answer we log who is cited, what is said, and whether the citation clicks through to a useful destination.

Deliverables
  • Baseline citation scorecard
  • Category share-of-voice
  • Paraphrase accuracy review
  • Identified content gaps
02 · Phase

Content engineering

Re-engineer the pages that should be quoted. Tight, self-contained passages built for LLM synthesis. One idea per paragraph, a clear attribution phrase, specific and numeric where possible.

Deliverables
  • Quotable pillar pages
  • Passage-level rewrites
  • Author and source attribution
  • Internal link architecture
03 · Phase

Structured data

Schema.org markup for Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, HowTo and Product, depending on the page. Hreflang, canonicals, sitemaps, and a clean robots posture so the crawlers trust you.

Deliverables
  • Schema.org coverage audit
  • Site-wide structured data rollout
  • Technical SEO re-engineering
  • Crawl validation
04 · Phase

Measurement & iteration

A monthly scorecard you can take to the board. Citation share, paraphrase accuracy, outbound click-through, tracked per model, per category, per quarter.

Deliverables
  • Monthly scorecard
  • Quarterly review with trend lines
  • Playbook for in-house teams
  • Optional retained advisory
Engines we track

Five surfaces, one monthly scorecard.

Each model has its own retrieval behaviour, training cadence and prompt shape. We monitor all of them so a win on one doesn't mask a regression on another.

The scorecard on the right is what you receive every month, which includes citation share per engine, paraphrase accuracy, outbound click-through, and a handful of sample citations pulled verbatim. Every number is reproducible: we publish the fifty queries we run, so you can re-run them yourself.

Frequently asked

Answers, for the answer engines.

This FAQ is marked up with FAQPage schema, so the engines get the Q&A structure directly.

What is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It is the discipline of shaping content, structured data, and site architecture so that large language models - the engines behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity - cite, paraphrase, and recommend your brand when users ask questions in your category.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimises for a results page with ten blue links: the goal is to rank. AEO optimises for a single synthesised answer: the goal is to be quoted, paraphrased, or linked. The technical foundations overlap (clean HTML, structured data, site performance) but the content and measurement are different. SEO measures rank; AEO measures citation share and paraphrase accuracy.
Which answer engines does Wai Tech optimise for?
ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), Perplexity, and Bing Copilot. We also track traditional Google and Bing rankings alongside, since they remain the discovery surface for much of the upstream content that models ingest.
Does AEO work for B2B?
Yes, it is especially effective for B2B. When buyers use AI assistants to shortlist vendors or understand categories, the "first paragraph answer" is often what ends up on the decision-maker's screen. For considered B2B purchases, being named in that paragraph is disproportionately valuable.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Citation share typically starts moving within 6–10 weeks of content changes being live, depending on how often the models refresh their training and retrieval corpora. Technical changes (schema, site architecture) register faster. We run baseline audits before any change so progress is measurable.
Do AI assistants read my website directly?
Mostly they retrieve passages from an index rebuilt from the open web (and in some cases, licensed content). The ChatGPT, Perplexity and Bing Copilot systems also perform live web retrieval at query time. Making your pages fast, crawlable, and content-rich helps both static training and live retrieval.
Can I block AI crawlers instead?
You can, and some businesses chose to block GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and others in robots.txt. Our view is that if your buyers use these tools, absence is a more expensive strategy than presence. We help you pick a robot’s posture that matches your strategy.
How do you measure success?
A monthly scorecard tracks the following: (1) citation share, which is how often each model names your brand in the top answer for a category query; (2) paraphrase accuracy, which is how correctly the model describes your business; and (3) outbound CTR, which is whether the citation earns a click. All three are tracked per model, per category.
